2010 Robot Boot Camp

Day One:

Brainstorming

Participants were given a challenge: "How many pennies can you keep afloat using only one piece of Aluminum Foil?" Each group competed against the last, and had only 5 minutes to build, and 5 minutes to test their design.

Fasteners

Learn about everything from nuts, bolts, pop rivets, various caps, threads, and many more. Proper application techniques were reviewed.

Common Mechanical Tools

Everything from a standard hammer to Phillips and Flat Head Screwdrivers! Students were shown common tools and their uses.

Using a MIll

Students were given the opportunity to receive training on how to properly use a Bridgeport Mill. Tool & Dye Manufacturer and Mentor Dave Bolinger showed students how to use Numerical Controls to accurately Mill a hole into a block of aluminum.

"Minute to Win It" Challenge

"This Blows" - Player must continually blow up a balloon and expel the air from it to knock cups off of a table.

Batteries

Learn how to properly carry, install, and charge an FRC regulation battery. Instructions for proper spill clean-up were included.

Springs and Gears

Springs and Gears have many more applications than most people think. Learn how to create more torque, speed, and efficiency using these.

Safety

General safety knowledge, as well as some training in Safety outside of the FIRST Robotics Competition.

Common Electrical Tools

Wire Cutters, zip ties, soldering iron and more!

Day Two:

Brainstorming

Participants were challenged to build a paper airplane, and then competed in a contest to see whose could fly the farthest.

Alliance Selection and Scoring System

How FIRST Robotics Competition Alliance selection works, along with review of scoring systems from previous games

Marking and Measuring a Hole

Use a scribe to properly mark and measure a hole before drilling and tapping it.

Drilling and Tapping a Hole

Use a drill press to properly drill and tap a hole into a piece of material

Welding

A hands-on demonstration on TIG and MIG welding, with an opportunity to operate the Welding machine

"Minute To Win It" Challenge

"Contagious"- Start with a stack of 3 empty cans in 1 hand, 3 full cans in the other. Without setting them down, transfer stacks into opposite hands.

Wire and Electrical Materials

Learn which gauge of wire to use when installing specific components and all of the common components of electrical systems.

LabVIEW

A brief overview of LabVIEW, one of the programming languages that is available for your FIRST Robotics Competition Robot.

End Effectors

Common methods for developing and improving an End Effector

Chassis

Motors, transmissions, drive train, and wheels

Day Three:

Brainstorming

Scouting and Strategy

Scouting Captain Zach Orr shared information on what it is like to watch teams, create a pick list, and strategize for game play.

Robot Controls

Operator feedback, gaming controllers, driver station

Using a Lathe

Students were given the opportunity to receive training on how to properly use a Lathe. Participants were shown how to use a lathe to turn down a piece of aluminum.

More than Just Robots

FIRST Robotics is about more than just Robots. From community service to outreach to spreading the word about Science and Technology.

"Minute to Win It" Challenge

"Worm Diving" - Get a pretzel out of a fishbowl using a sticky gummy worm attached to the end of a fishing line.

Sensors and Feedback

Sensors that are used on robots and their common applications

Building Materials

Participants will become familiar with materials that are used to create robots, learn their practical applications, and how to standardize the materials they choose.

Pneumatics

Proper applications of Penumatics, including the pros and cons of using them, and learn about pneumatic components
